Equipment Overview

A backhoe is a tractor-like piece of equipment used for digging trenches, moving materials, breaking up asphalt, and so much more. They operate with the power of a tractor, combining the capabilities of a wheel loader and an excavator into a single, highly mobile machine.

Unlike other equipment in its class, backhoes have working hydraulic functions on both sides of the unit. On the front is a wheel loader bucket, used to carry heavy loads of dirt, gravel, or other loose materials. On the back is a digging arm, which is interchangeable with a range of attachments to assist in excavating tasks.

This dual-function paired with their power makes them an extremely versatile piece of heavy machinery, offering greater flexibility on their job sites. Many operators gravitate toward backhoes for snow removal, farming, loading, excavation, and other construction projects.

Equipped with tracked, heavy-duty wheels, backhoes are designed for maximum traction over soft dirt, mud, and other uneven surfaces.

Backhoe Specifications

In order to buy the best backhoe for your purposes, you must understand their operating specifications.

Engine Power

The engine power of backhoes range from 70 - 150 hp, with the most standard models falling between 90 - 110 hp. This power is similar to that found in tractors, demonstrating their ability to perform in heavy-duty applications.

Digging Depth & Force

As one of their core functions, digging depth is a crucial backhoe specification. Most standard models dig between 14 to 16 feet with a pounds-force of 10,000 - 16,000. When configured with an extendable dipper stick, dig depth can increase to over 20 feet.

Loader Capacity

The front bucket loader is defined by its bucket capacity, lift capacity, and lift height. Generally, bucket capacity falls between 1 and 1.6 cubic yards. At its full height of 11 to 12 feet, standard backhoes can lift weights between 6,000 - 9,000 pounds.

Backhoe Pricing

The costs of backhoes can vary drastically depending on the size, condition, manufacturer, and features. New, standard backhoes with a lift capacity of 6,000 - 9,000 pounds can range from $90,000 - $150,000. Smaller models are available for as low as $45,000, and larger models can jump to as high as $200,000+.

Keep in mind that smaller models are less expensive because they have a limited dig depth and lift capacity. You shouldn’t buy a smaller model simply because your budget is limited, especially if you need the same specifications and power of a standard forklift.

Instead, consider buying used equipment to cut down on costs. Lightly-used backhoes with less than 2,500 operating hours can save you as low as 5% off the original price. Those prices decrease as the equipment’s operating hours increase – a backhoe with 2,5000 - 5,000 hours can cut costs by as much as 44%!

Types of Backhoes

Like most heavy machinery, backhoes vary by size and equipment models. The most common are side-shift, compact, and extendable backhoes.

Side-Shift Backhoe

The main difference in side-shift backhoes is the position of the boom arm. The backhoe arm is mounted on the horizontal frame along the back of the tractor, allowing the arm and operator’s seat to hydraulically shift to the left or right of the machine.

This configuration is extremely valuable in confined spaces where the backhoe can’t be centered on the dig line because of an existing structure. Therefore, they’re used most often in urban environments.

Compact Backhoe Loader

Like their name suggests, compact loaders are smaller backhoe machines designed for smaller-scale projects. They have a lower horsepower, operating weight, and digging depth, but they’re more accessible in jobs with limited space or weight-restricted surfaces.

Compact backhoes are used most often for landscaping, small excavation jobs, or work in residential areas.

Extendable Backhoe

If you’re in need of additional digging depth or reach, an extendable backhoe is right for the job. These are not necessarily a distinct type of backhoe, but rather an attachment that’s becoming more common because of their added flexibility. They can dig deeper, place piles further away, and reach further obstacles.

These extendable backhoes use a two-part telescoping attachment called the “dipper stick,” which can be hydraulically extended or retracted based on the job’s needs.

Choosing the Right Equipment

Buying a backhoe is a large investment. With so many different models available and so many different businesses to buy from, it’s difficult to know where to start.

In addition to your budget, consider your needs. If you mainly work in smaller urban and residential areas, a compact model may be able to save you $35,000 - $40,000. But don’t just buy a smaller machine to save money. If you need a backhoe with increased horsepower and digging depth, standard-sized backhoes are worth the investment.
